Let’s close the gap on resilient societies

In this campaign, the four pillars are:

1) Resilient cities keep essential services running during floods, droughts, or heat waves – enabling them to bounce back from shocks, preserving and strengthening liveability for those who live there.

2) Resilient infrastructure keeps people connected and goods moving, whatever the weather. Such infrastructure is competitive and convenient, supporting the wellbeing and safety of its users every day.

3) Climate resilience and nature-based solutions strengthen resilience at scale, reducing flood risk, cooling urban areas, protecting and regenerating habitats and biodiversity, and underpinning social cohesion and economic growth.

4) Resilient energy grids provide secure, affordable, and sustainable power supply despite external disruptions. They help advance energy independence from imported fossil fuels and add a growing share of renewables to the grid.

We are entering a time of poly crises, where multiple global challenges collide and reinforce each other. Resilience is one of the most powerful approaches we have to navigate this complexity and help societies, businesses, and communities thrive despite increased uncertainty. The poly crises unfolds across five categories:

Economy: Inflation, rising debt, and fragile supply chains create instability. At the same time, the OECD estimates USD 90 trillion must be invested in infrastructure by 2030, yet current levels fall far short, putting future growth at risk.

Biodiversity: The UN warns that one million species are at risk of extinction, undermining ecosystems we depend on for food, water, and health.

Climate: Global temperatures are on track to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, driving more frequent and severe weather events.

Society: Rapid urbanization, ageing populations, and migration are reshaping societies, while growing inequality – both within countries and between the Global North and South – is widening gaps in opportunity, cohesion, and trust.

Security and geopolitics: Instability is disrupting energy markets, global trade, and national and cyber security, accelerating the need for energy independence, robust infrastructure, and investments in defense.

By reimagining life in ways that build long-term resilience, equity, and energy security, we can create societies that not only endure but bounce back stronger after shocks, secure societies that are inclusive, connected, and in balance with nature.

From clean, reliable energy systems and low-carbon transport to nature-based flood protection and climate-smart buildings, the tools to bridge this gap are already available. What we need now is a bold, collective mindset to act – together.
