Growing Beyond Borders: A Journey of Learning, Connection and Impact
International learning opportunities gave Madeleine Behn the chance to collaborate with experts from across Ramboll, broaden her perspective, and accelerate her professional development.

Earlier this year, Madeleine Behn, Senior Air Quality Consultant at Ramboll Australia, had the opportunity to attend Ramboll's Air & Climate Technology Transfer Conference (ACTTC26) in San Francisco and participate in a month-long technical bootcamp in Colorado. More than professional development experiences, the two programmes enabled her to deepen her technical expertise, gain fresh perspectives on the evolving environmental consulting landscape, and build lasting connections across Ramboll's global network.
Broadening Perspectives Through Global Learning
As an air quality consultant, much of my day-to-day work focuses on helping clients understand and manage environmental impacts. While technical expertise is a critical foundation, I have always believed that some of the most valuable learning happens when you step outside your usual environment and engage with people who approach challenges differently. Both ACTTC26 and the Colorado bootcamp gave me exactly that opportunity.
More than simply learning new skills, these experiences gave me the chance to see how air quality, climate, and environmental challenges are being tackled across different regions, industries, and regulatory environments. They reinforced the value of continuous learning and demonstrated how much we can gain by connecting with colleagues from around the world.
ACTTC26 brought together more than 80 Ramboll colleagues globally to exchange knowledge, debate ideas, and explore emerging trends shaping the future of air quality, noise and climate consulting. The conference covered topics ranging from digital innovation and air quality modelling to climate risk, monitoring technologies, and policy developments.
One of the most valuable aspects was gaining insight into how teams across North America are approaching many of the same challenges we face in Australia. Despite operating in different markets and regulatory environments, there were clear similarities in the issues we are all trying to solve. At the same time, I was exposed to different approaches to technology, project delivery, and problem-solving that challenged me to think beyond familiar ways of working.
Accelerating Technical Growth Through Innovation
A recurring theme throughout the conference was digital innovation and its growing role in environmental consulting.
I was particularly impressed by the advanced digital tools being integrated into project delivery. Seeing examples of AI-assisted regulatory reviews, cloud-based modelling platforms, automated data pipelines, and emerging machine learning applications highlighted just how rapidly our industry is evolving.
The experience reinforced the importance of remaining curious and adaptable. As environmental challenges become more complex, technology will play an increasingly important role in helping us deliver efficient, data-driven, and scalable solutions for clients.
What stood out most was that these technologies are not replacing technical expertise. Rather, they are enhancing it by allowing consultants to spend more time on analysis, interpretation, and decision-making. It encouraged me to think differently about how innovation can strengthen both the quality and efficiency of our work.

Learning Through Immersion and Collaboration
While the conference exposed me to new ideas and emerging innovations, the Colorado bootcamp gave me the opportunity to apply that learning in a practical, project-based setting.
For a month, I was embedded within another Ramboll office, working alongside colleagues on real projects and gaining first-hand exposure to different workflows, tools, and approaches to project delivery.
One example was contributing to a data centre project where I was able to apply a new modelling methodology supported by GIS platforms. By using GIS to streamline pre- and post-processing steps, the team was able to manage data streams more efficiently and reduce the manual effort typically required to prepare, process, and interpret modelling inputs and outputs.
The experience accelerated my technical growth by showing how digital tools can strengthen modelling workflows, improve consistency, and create more scalable solutions. It also reinforced the value of learning directly from colleagues with different technical backgrounds and applying those insights to challenges in my own work.
Building Connections Across Borders
One of the most rewarding aspects of both experiences was the opportunity to build relationships with colleagues across the business.
In a global company like Ramboll, there is tremendous value in connecting with people who bring different perspectives, experiences, and expertise. Through the conference and bootcamp, I was able to establish connections with specialists working in air quality, climate, digital innovation, modelling, and permitting and compliance projects across multiple regions.
These relationships have expanded my professional network far beyond Australia and given me greater visibility into the depth of expertise available throughout the organisation. More importantly, they have created lasting connections that will continue to support collaboration and knowledge sharing long after the trips themselves.

Connecting Technical Excellence with Purpose
Perhaps the most important lesson from these experiences was gaining a clearer understanding of how technical excellence connects with meaningful impact.
Throughout ACTTC26, there was a strong focus on how technical work can support broader outcomes, including decarbonisation, public health, climate resilience, and more informed decision-making. It reinforced that technical rigour is essential to credibility and defensibility, but its true value lies in how that work is applied to solve real problems.
This was illustrated in a presentation on developing decision-relevant climate risk data for hyperscale data centres. The work involved analysing site-specific climate hazards and quantifying climate-driven downtime risks over the operational life of the facilities. Although highly technical, the outputs were directly connected to practical decisions, helping infrastructure owners identify vulnerabilities, select more resilient sites, and design facilities that can better withstand future extreme weather events.
Given the growing reliance on digital infrastructure, this example showed me how climate risk analysis can support the long-term resilience and reliability of essential services. It also strengthened my commitment to delivering high-quality technical work while keeping the bigger picture in mind. Whether the goal is reducing emissions, supporting communities, or enabling better decisions, technical expertise has the greatest impact when it contributes to positive and tangible outcomes.
Looking Ahead
Looking back, the greatest takeaway from these international experiences is not a single technical skill or piece of knowledge, but the broader perspective I gained from learning alongside talented colleagues from around the world.
The opportunity to build international networks, exchange ideas, experience different ways of working, and challenge my own assumptions has made me a more confident consultant and a more effective collaborator.
As I continue my career at Ramboll, I am increasingly drawn to projects that bring together technical air quality expertise and digital innovation to address complex environmental challenges. The lessons, relationships, and perspectives gained through ACTTC26 and the Colorado bootcamp will continue to shape how I approach my work and the contribution I hope to make for clients, communities, and the environment.
For me, these experiences reinforced a simple but powerful idea: growth happens when we step beyond our comfort zones, learn from one another, and remain open to new possibilities. That is where technical excellence grows, and where meaningful impact begins.
